Re-Imagining A New World:
Building Practices of
Awareness, Activism and Anti-Racism
as a Taiko Community
History
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
RE-IMAGINING A NEW WORLD was a series of virtual gatherings over the span of 4 weeks in the summer of 2020, made urgent by COVID-19 pandemic and the BLM, anti-racism movement. The program welcomed participants to join in a virtual practice to address racism, anti-blackness, systemic oppression and activism together as a Taiko Community. 23 taiko thought leaders facilitated unique topics that were personally relevant and authentic to each of them. Over 200 participants committed to one topic, and over the course of three sessions, practiced and deepened the work together in a small group.
The space was created as an opportunity to learn, grow, and build practices of awareness, so that we could all begin to move together against the systemic oppression that has impacted all of our lives.
Each gathering followed the same format:
- Beginning Plenary with everyone organized by Karen Young & Michelle Fujii (with guest speakers)
- Break-out Groups led by Topic Facilitators

INSPIRATION:
“Under duress, we do not RISE to our expectations, we FALL to our training level.” ~Bruce Lee
We have been living in a context that is inequitable, driven by a curriculum that has been historically in conflict with creating a just community.
It’s time to re-train, and as a taiko community, we know how to practice.
As taiko leaders, players, and artists, we possess powerful tools to imagine new possibilities, spark radical shifts, and create change. As a community, we know firsthand the discipline and practice that it takes to make things happen. It is up to all of us to re-contextualize these tools in the framework of practicing anti-racism and building an effective social movement.
